The fief of the lords of Bagé

Present for nearly 3 centuries, the lords of Bagé left their mark on the territory and made Bâgé-le-Châtel the first political capital of Bresse from the ninth to the thirteenth century, thanks to its privileged location in Bresse. Dominating the plain by about fifty metres, the city of Bâgé-le-Châtel still retains traces of its history and its prestigious past, in particular thanks to squares and streets with evocative names: the Place de l’Eperon, the Place du Jeu de l’Arc… or the rue Condemnale which provides access to the Place de l’Écart, where the condemned were once quartered.

Tour of the ramparts of Bagé

In addition to some traces of the old ramparts, the town retains its castle (private property) and a few towers, one of which is topped with a weathervane with the coat of arms of Bagé and is adorned with two nineteenth-century stained glass windows relating the life of the lords of Bâgé.

A discovery circuit of the city of the lords of Bagé marked out with explanatory plaques allows you to walk freely through the village and to go around it by the parapet walk. The tourist office offers guided tours of the village in summer!
