The fief of the lords of Bagé

The village of Bâgé-le-Châtel has kept its circular location imposed by the surrounding wall erected in the fourteenth century. This is still evidenced by a few towers of the old ramparts and the castle of the Lords of Bagé (private property) which can be seen by taking the rampart walk.

The lords of Bagé extended their possessions of the Seille to the gates of Lyon and made Bâgé-le-Châtel the first political capital of Bresse. In the eleventh century, they had the monks of Tournus build the church of Saint-André-de-Bâgé, the most beautiful Romanesque building in the department of Ain.

If you are passionate about medieval history, a visit is a must for these 2 sites located 500m from each other.
